New Rodcast Series: Secret Genius of Robert Pollard

Spherical Miracle a collage by Robert Pollard.

Well looky here! We have a brand new mini-series of rodcasts to unveil. It's all songs by ONE GUY!! Sounds great, right? This guy is the greatest songwriter in rock and roll history though. BOOM, I said it, and I meant it. A lot of people are familiar with Robert Pollard's work on Guided by Voices' most popular albums, but this dude has unleashed probably somewhere around 8,000 songs into the world and so I'm gonna play some of his songs from the lesser recognized releases: very early GBV stuff, solo albums, other projects, B sides, unreleased. Some will be scratchy weird recordings, some will be bombastic full band studio affairs. It will all be filled with melody, poetry, and weird beauty. Get in. Get deep, you will be rewarded for your openness. I've done all the heavy lifting for you already, and I'm the one who has to deal with the addiction, you just get to reap the benefits of my edited obsession.

It's the first in our new interview series...LOT TALKS. The intent is to go somewhat in depth in a casual way with some of my and hopefully your favorite artists. I think we collectively uncover some aspects of these artists that aren't normally covered and also get some exclusive material out of these suckers!

First up, we have Adam Forkner of White Rainbow and so many other projects talks about his new album, New Clouds coming out soon on Kranky and also talks about some other projects he is involved with like Rob Walmart, We Like Cats which is a dub group he is in with Honey Owens of Valet and Eva Salens of Inca Ore, the new Adrian Orange album, and more. We also talk about humor in music, hyphy, and Adam's work with making more beat based music throughout the years.

White Rainbow - Stups

A recent example of Adam's more beat based work. If any rappers or anyone needs beats out there. Hit up my man!

Kris Jensen Memorial Auction

It's me! Steve Schroeder, TV WIZARD.

"On the evening of Sunday, August 2, the Jensen family—including Rachael Jensen, keyboardist and violinist for the Portland-based pop group Parenthetical Girls—suffered a major tragedy: four members of her immediate family were involved in a fatal car accident while traveling home from an annual family reunion. Her father and two brothers were rushed to an intensive care facility, and are now in the early stages of their recovery. Tragically, family matron Kris Jensen, 51, passed away at the scene. Kris’ extreme kindness and exuberance touched a tremendous number of people, but it was her particular enthusiasm for music and generosity with musicians that broadened her impact to so many people in our community. All proceeds from the show and auction will benefit the Kris Jensen Memorial Fund, a trust organized to assist the surviving members of the Jensen family with the mounting financial strain of their medical care."

Rachael is a great friend of mine and States Rights Records and I had the opportunity to meet Kris a couple times. I was proud to DJ at the Portland benefit concert this past week and also proud to lend a couple items for the Memorial Auction. First we have a huge pack of States Rights LPs, CDs, notebooks, T-Shirts which retail would be well over $200. In addition to all the cool stuff I will be providing the auction winner with special burned DVDs every week of tv shows that I curate for them. Let's be honest, I'm pretty good at TV. I find cool shows, I'm good at downloading them, NO COMMERCIALS. It's a special service and I guarentee you that you will be exposed to some cool, interesting, awesome programming you haven't seen before. There is a second auction item that is for just the TV curation service aka Grunty TV (Grunty being my cat) that's for those who already have most of the States Rights stuff.

There are tons of great items in the auction: packs from other great labels, test pressings, amazing art (photos, prints, drawings, etc), a special cake, tea services, haircuts, homemade theremins, and way more.

Here is the list of all the auction items on Ebay.

Bid on stuff! There is no better use of your money. I think the auctions all end Tuesday evening.

Triangle Trinity Timewarp

Rebecca Carlisle-Healy (aka Suzi Corpso) of Flaspar and so much more found some YACHT artifacts in her time travels.

While Jona and Claire of YACHT have been out sharing their beliefs and tones with a large portion of Planet Earth some of the more lab based members of YACHT have been at home putting those triangles to work. Do the words FLUX CAPICATOR mean anything to you guys?? How 'bout 1.21 GIGAWATTS? Well, it's true...somehow YACHT has turned their triangles into a time travel device! What they chose to do with the time travel device is ALMOST more important than the device itself. YACHT traveled to many eras and collected their favorite musicians such as Arthur Russell and the B-52s and Brian Eno and brought them all back to 2009 and then recorded the WORLDS GREATEST JAM SESSION OF ALL TIME. It's true. After this jam session occurred YACHT was properly inspired and motivated and then immediately made their new record SEE MYSTERY LIGHTS.

The big news is that States Rights is now selling this HISTORIC JAM SESSION (or as some would could it, an awesome inspiration mixtape). It's called Anthem of the Trinity. It's only 5 bucks and its a great mix. Remember all States Rights purchases come with a free blank States Rights notebook.

Anthem of the Trinity

In more YACHT news, I just added their new 7" vinyl record distro shop. It has their recent live show banger "Waste of Time" and a rad collabo with that lady at the top of this blog entry. When you buy it you get a free bonus mp3 remix of "Waste of Time" by Hedford Vachal. You can buy Anthem of the Trinity and the 7" together for $9. It's called the Apocrypha Pak!

Jib Kidder is That Dance Floor Classic.

Official video for "Windowdipper" by Jib Kidder. Directed by Jib Kidder.

A couple months ago some Youtube searches turned up that a dude named Travis Wall had made up some pretty amazing choreography to Jib Kidder's "Windowdipper." Turns out dude is pretty big time in the dance world and a choreographer for the Fox show So You Think You Can Dance. Then more videos popped up of Travis teaching the choreography to some classes and then more videos of people dancing and practicing to "Windowdipper". So, that was a cool trip.

Then I got a call from someone at So You Think You Can Dance! Boo yah. One of the dancers from the show wants to do a solo dance to "Windowdipper." His name is Ade and he's one of the favorites to win the whole season. The problem with that is the contestants only do the solo dance when they are in danger of getting voted out (in the bottom of popular votes) and so Ade hasn't been in the bottom yet and hasn't been able to dance to "Windowdipper" yet. So, I keep watching this weird dance reality show to see if somehow we snuck awesome Jib Kidder's chopped jammer onto national network TV but that tree has bore no fruit as of yet. Jib Kidder is making videos for every song from All on Yall and they are incredible and so true to the music. You can peep them all on the Jib Kidder Youtube Channel or the new States Rights Vimeo. I'll also be posting more here as they come.

UPDATE: East coast homies have foretold that this is actually gonna happen tonight!!! Check out So You Think You Can Dance on Fox at 9pm.

DOUBLE UPDATE: THIS TOTALLY HAPPENED AND WAS COOL!

Call Me Up cause its to fly.

Cains & Abels: Michelle Vondiziano, Jonathan Dawe, Josh Ippel, and David Sampson

After appearing on States Rights' last two compilations and a long relationship of mutual interest we are so excited to be able to bring you Cains & Abels' first full length album Call Me Up. It's a big sounding record that swells and lilts in gorgeous ways while ranging from heartbreaking bombast to humble beauty.

Themed around the desire for human connection, Cains & Abels' new album Call Me Up is the story of a specific relationship unraveling. Lush, atmospheric guitar and elemental drums work with the reaching vocal melodies to bring to life David Sampson's tumultuous inner world, torn apart by divorce and doubt, while revealing his vulnerable desire to be healed. The lyrics intone bleak pictures of birds of prey, bones, lonely highway drives and isolating landscapes, but are able to yield an overriding sense of hope.

Call Me Up is the perfect showcase for Cains & Abels now as a four piece band progressing further from Sampson's previous incarnation as a mostly solo or solo plus one affair. The sum of four people plus an immaculate recording, Call Me Up will inhabit your days and fill them with beauty.

You can get both Call Me Up and Bad Weather California's Young Punks together for a special low price! Only 15 bucks! It's the NEW FAMILY PACK to celebrate these new artists in our SRR family. Two great records!

Don't forget that all orders from States Rights Records come with our new awesome little blank notebooks for your jotting pleasure.

We here at States Rights Records have been curating a Song of the Day project for a while for our friends and collaborators at UrbanHonking. There is a little flash player in the navigation bar on the upper right. Track info gets updated here when the track gets changed and then every month or so a zip file is posted of all the mp3s. It's a great way to be exposed to new music. Keep up with it.

We've just opened a new Twitter account for States Rights. We will be posting about all kinds of stuff like new band recommendations, links to songs and videos, info about new stuff on the SRR site like podcasts. It will be an awesome way to get a little more music in your life. Follow!

States Rights on Twitter

The twitter account is the start of a new initiative here at States Rights thats gonna also include a new interview series, more music videos, more podcasts. Lots of really exciting stuff to come.

One more thing! There is a newish podcast available. It's called INFINITE REGGAE SUMMER/YOU CAN GET IT IF YOU REALLY WANT. It's the 10th SRR podcast and definitely one of our favorites to make. It's a pretty good soundtrack to summer if you ask us. Here's a direct link to the mp3.

SO MUCH STUFF! We are busting at the seams and so much more is coming!

Young Punks, Scout Books, and Direct Dig! O MY!

Bad Weather California's Young Punks & new States Rights Records scout books.

Hootie Hoo! We have new exciting products and projects popping out of us like blossoms blooming.

Woo Hoo! Ay yi yi! Bad Weather California's first full length album Young Punks makes you hoot and holler. Young Punks is a celebration waiting to happen. Chris Adolf, Adam Baumeister, Joe Sampson, and Logan Corcoran are Denver's pied pipers clanging some kind of beautiful racket leading those who still believe in the power of rock and roll and reminding the rest about the power of letting loose. Young Punks is acid tinged boogie country punk. Adolf's lyrics bring forth imagery of utopian communes full of free spirits and idealist political imagery. It's a record of rootsy optimism and wild humanism.

Bad Weather Cali's frontman Adolf was the man behind The Love Letter Band, who put out a couple full lengths and a couple eps (including one as part of The Pregnancy Series). Bad Weather California is in some ways the yang to TLLB's yin. TLLB was in many ways an experiment with home recording and a small, borderline precious sound (some toy instruments). Bad Weather California is a band in the true sense and focuses on live shows but his many years of focusing on recordings shines through on this excellent and focused album.

Young Punks is gonna make your day better.

When you order the Bad Weather California CD you get a free bonus MP3 AND AND AND you will also get a free new States Rights Records blank notebook. It's our first piece of States Rights schwag and we think they are the most useful schwag yet! Everyone likes a nice little blank notebook for doodles and lists and stuff, yeah? We've always been keen on throwing in secret additional treats in with orders and this is our newest least secret treat we will be throwing in with orders. There are two different cover designs.

We are also proud to unveil today that States Rights has our own direct digital downloads store now. Wherever you see this little icon:

That means you will be directed to our direct digital download store. We will able to offer some slightly better pricing and some exclusive stuff there. It's also better to take middlemen out of the equation, yeah?

Very shortly we will be bringing forth a new album from the Chicago band Cains & Abels. It's called Call Me Up. Here's a little preview.

When The Bad Hits The Land

Bad Weather California. Photo by Cory Gustason.

Man oh Man! Just got back from Australia and Vegas with those YACHTs guys, what a time that was. I HUGGED A KOALA! We have so many new things coming up. BRAND NEW BANDS AND ALBUMS AND THINGS AND THINGS! Its sorta like where do we even start? Here! Here is where we start.

Bad Weather California is coming to get you! Bad Weather California is now officially all the way members of the States Rights Family. They appeared with a total jammer on Grown Zone. Chris Adolf (guit/vox) was the main dude in The Love Letter Band who had an EP in The Pregnancy Series. BWC is his new band and they have created an amazing album called "New Punks" that we are so proud to announce that States Rights is releasing on April 28th. It's total feel good rock and roll and this is a band that rips you a new one...in the right place.

Here's a track from "Young Punks":

Bad Weather California - Two Ways

Bad Weather California is hitting the streets this week...and no, they aren't heading down to SXSW like every other band on the planet. They are gonna come to your town (in the West) to keep you company while all the other bands go to Texas. This band is developing a total reputation for being total shredders live so visit them and get shredded. They will have copies of the "Young Punks" with them!

Here are their tour dates (totally updated the Events page with some YACHT ones and White Fang too):

3/18/09 - Urban Lounge, Salt Lake City, Utah w/Future of the Ghost
3/19/09 - Whitworth University, Spokane, Washington
3/20/09 - The Wail, Portland, Oregon w/White Fang & Dash!
3/21/09 - The Department of Safety, Anacortes, Washington w/White Fang & Mt. Eerie

Also, our main man in the Bay, Jib Kidder, has been cooking up some videos for his jams that are not to be missed. How does he have his own midas touch of superchop in audio and now as well VIDEO. Dude is bonkers. The vids are perfect and weird and bizarre:

Pleased to Pay for Pregnancy?

Final Fantasy at North York Central Library. Photo by David Topping.

We are officially in the third trimester now as we excitedly announce that the 7th Volume of the illustrious Pregnancy Series is now available for purchase. Final Fantasy were kind enough to record Plays to Please for the series and its gorgeous.

On Plays to Please Owen Pallett pays tribute to the songs of Toronto's Alex Lukashevsky and his band Deep Dark United. Deep Dark United's music can be described as...undescribable. But under its waves of hazy unease lay perfectly made songs that Pallett had dreamed of giving a big band treatment to ever since he and Lukashevsky bonded on tour over their mutual love of Louis Prima and Marvin Gaye.

Working with The St. Kitts Orchestra, Pallett gives the songs a huge stage to strut around on and-were it not for the mordant and contemporary wit in the lyrics-you could mistake Lukashevsky's songs for Tin Pan Alley standards. Given that, why not try dropping "I Saved a Junky Once" at your grandmother's birthday this year?

This release is also produced in association with the Blocks Recording Club limited edition 10" vinyl version.

Don't forget that Jib Kidder's All on Yall is still new and totally bumping and that the Parenthetical Girls new album Entanglements which is somewhat of a sister record to Pays to Please is in our distro section.

This Time Its Really ALL ON YALL.

The Jib Kidder Superchalking at What The Heck Fest 08

It's happened. States Rights Records has folded to industry pressure. We have produced our first new fangled BIG OLD VINYL RECORD! It's true! It's a pretty excellent format. Jib Kidder's amazing album All on Yall is available on the LP + CD format!

Sometimes projects take 5 years and sometimes it is worth it. After spending many years making music with his guitar and voice and other tactile instruments Sean Yent Schuster Craig started a project that was using machines to take other musics and make something altogether new with them. The palatte for this new project became primarily the sounds of southern underground rap that would consistently be rattling out of trunks of cars all around him as he grew up in Georgia.

All on Yall is not a mash up. All on Yall is not a party record. All on Yall is not a pop culture reference joke waiting to happen. All on Yall is a RECORD. So many different iterations of the album passed through my speakers, almost always sounding complete to me; then a new version would arrive, and it would be pretty different, with some of my favorite moments missing. But new moments would arrive and make more sense. Addition by subtraction. Using his favorite tones, sounds, and rhythms like a painter would use their favorite colors or strokes. It's incredibly goofy and cliche to talk about this with the painting analogy but I've been thinking about it a lot in my brain the last week or so while listening to this album and I feel really excited about it in that way so I must use this way to talk about it.

All on Yall is the twankle and glisten that will taint your day in just the right way.

All on Yall is the first 12" vinyl record we have ever made! It's pretty incredible. With the awesome record you get the big and beautiful artwork, a cd version, and a mini wheatpasteable poster! There is also a CD only version available for the same price (its just cd in a plastic sleeve with an insert).

ALSO! The first 50 orders of All on Yall will come with a free copy of the All on Yall: Da Mixtape! After the first fifty you can add the mixtape for only two dollars. Scoop this up!

ALSO ALSO! We have copies of the new Parenthetical Girls CD, Entanglements, in our distro shop. It's a gorgeous affair. We are proud of our old friends.
